Architecture is called the art of devising, designing and constructing buildings and structures where human activities can be carried out, and which, at the same time, are functional, enduring and aesthetically valuable. The word, as such, comes from the Latin architectūra.
In this sense, architecture is a discipline that is governed by a set of technical and aesthetic principles, where the beauty of construction must be in harmonic balance with its functionality and utility. Hence, it is said that the architecture involves the alteration of the physical space for the satisfaction of the human needs of housing, work, industry, commerce, religion, etc.
Because architecture is a reflection of the needs, values and interests of different human societies during history, it is also an important cultural manifestation that allows us to understand the way in which human beings have related to their environment. the long of the time.
Architecture is also called the set of works, buildings or monuments, whether by an author: "The architecture of Le Corbusier was the most influential of the twentieth century"; of a technique or style: Greek, Gothic, Baroque, Mayan architecture, etc .; of a country: Mexican, Spanish, Argentinean architecture; or of a specific period: contemporary, modern, Renaissance architecture, etc.
Should architecture have other qualities, besides solidity, or is it enough with it? Some theorists believe that it is enough to fulfill its function (functional architecture). But others take Alberti's demand back into consideration, according to which comfort and solidity must be added to the delight of sight and spirit.
On this point there is also no unanimity: for some, a beautiful construction is the one that is accompanied by decoration, which can be sculpted, painted or simply reduced to some ornamental motifs (columns, pilasters) which are often referred to as "architectural decoration". For others, the decoration itself is useless, if not harmful. True beauty is born for them from the observation of certain proportions (relationship between height and width, distribution of the spans, etc.). as well as the use of a module or key number of which all the elements of the building are multiples. Therefore, at the same time there may be very different schools and architectural personalities.
