Wojciech Odrobina - Comfort applied to decoration and interior design.
At the level of interior design, furniture and decoration, comfort has evolved over the centuries and has become a mass product.
However, customs and fashions have a great weight in our concept of what is comfortable, and without reaching the extremes where aesthetics clearly wins over practicality, in many parts of our homes part of the practical comfort has been lost by the visual appearance
To give you an example, what prevails in many of the modern kitchens is that everything is hidden and well kept, as if it were a bank's safe.
However, a kitchen works more like a workshop where tools have to be in accessible places near where work is done.
In addition, within this same example, different studies have also indicated that it is most convenient to have work surfaces at different heights, but the kitchens still have the uniform countertops at a standardized height and width and of course, all of them finished in the same material .
Therefore comfort is related to habits and trends
On the other hand, comfort also refers to the simple fact of feeling good.
This has no mystery but what has no explanation is to understand why if the human body has not changed in centuries, our idea of what is comfortable does evolve even in a few years.
The answer is not to say that comfort is a 100% subjective experience. Because in any historical era there has always been a demonstrable consensus about what is comfortable and what is not.
As you can see, the comfort applied to interior design has more chicha than it seems, and although it is only experienced in a personal way, it is judged according to broader norms related to the socially validated.
Can you measure comfort?
It is easier to know when we feel good, than why. And it is even much easier to measure the lack of comfort.
And in the end, comfort is an invented concept, a cultural artifice like many others that implies a whole range of attributes
Comfort, efficiency, leisure, calm, pleasure, domesticity, intimacy ...
So although most of us don't know why we like what we like, the important thing will be to learn to recognize comfort when we experience it.
Comfort is essential to create a custom home and it is too important to be left to experts, so I invite you to rediscover for yourself what it means to you.
